Editor's note

The IAPG report signals a multi-decade sourcing opportunity for specialty chemicals, steel, and logistics tied to Vaca Muerta. Buyers should monitor Argentina's import regulations and logistics bottlenecks, as projected demand for barite, liquid chemicals, and steel products creates supply-chain risks and opportunities for exporters.

The expansion of Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale formation is set to trigger an unprecedented surge in demand for industrial inputs, construction services, and logistics, according to a new report from the Argentine Institute of Petroleum and Gas (IAPG). For overseas chemical and industrial suppliers, this signals a multi-decade sourcing opportunity for specialty chemicals, steel, cement, water treatment solutions, and logistics services tied to one of the world's largest unconventional hydrocarbon developments.

Scale of the expansion

The IAPG report outlines three growth scenarios—low, medium, and high—with the medium scenario projecting up to 9,600 horizontal wells drilled by 2040. Each well requires approximately 72,000 cubic meters of water for hydraulic fracturing, 11,600 tonnes of sand, 275 tonnes of barite, 19,800 liters of liquid chemicals, over 100 tonnes of solid chemicals, and nearly 300 tonnes of steel casing. This translates into cumulative consumption of millions of tonnes of steel and cement, record water usage, and up to 130,000 kilometers of new pipelines.

Infrastructure and construction demands

Building production batteries—facilities that separate oil, gas, and water—requires massive material inputs. A typical oil battery demands 8,000 cubic meters of concrete, 300 kilometers of cabling, 1,000 instruments, and 2.5 million construction hours. Gas plants need 7,000 cubic meters of concrete, 200 kilometers of cables, 700 instruments, and up to 2 million hours of labor. Each battery also requires 35,000 square meters of land and up to 250 workers during peak construction.

Logistics and supply chain implications

The scale of Vaca Muerta's expansion will strain existing logistics networks. The report highlights the need for deep-water ports and high-capacity transport corridors to handle large-diameter pipes, industrial modules, heavy machinery, and treatment plant components. The port of Bahía Blanca is identified as a key hub for inbound supplies. Hundreds of companies in metallurgy, chemicals, transportation, and services will be involved in supplying drilling equipment, fracturing services, sand transport, pipeline construction, and industrial plants.

What buyers should watch

Chemical and industrial input suppliers should monitor Argentina's import regulations and logistics bottlenecks. The projected demand for barite, liquid chemicals, solid chemicals, and steel products creates opportunities for exporters of specialty chemicals, water treatment additives, and corrosion inhibitors. Additionally, the need for 130,000 kilometers of new pipelines signals sustained demand for pipe coatings, welding consumables, and cathodic protection materials. Early engagement with local distributors and EPC contractors could secure long-term supply agreements.
