Editor's note

This order signals a strategic fleet renewal by a key European operator, directly impacting freight capacity and rates for chemical buyers reliant on Northern European routes. The reliance on Chinese shipbuilding for specialised stainless steel tankers introduces potential supply-chain risks and lead-time considerations for global sourcing.

German chemical tanker owner John T. Essberger has placed firm orders for two 7,900 dwt duplex stainless steel chemical tankers, with options for up to four more, at China Merchants Industry Yangzhou Dingheng. This move signals continued investment in modern, environmentally optimised tonnage for European chemical parcel trades, which may affect freight capacity and pricing for overseas chemical buyers reliant on Northern European shipping routes.

Fleet renewal details

The newbuildings are Ice Class 1A vessels, designed specifically for chemical parcel trades in Northern Europe. First delivery is scheduled for August 2028. Essberger said the order is part of a long-term strategy to replace older tonnage with more efficient ships that meet evolving regulatory and operational demands.

Previous orders and construction pipeline

In late 2024, Essberger booked up to six 13,000-dwt Ice Class 1A chemical tankers at Nantong Rainbow Offshore & Engineering Equipment. Additionally, four larger 13,800 dwt chemical tankers are currently under construction at the same yard and are expected to join the fleet before the new 7,900 dwt units. In 2021, the company placed orders for eight stainless steel parcel tankers at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard.

Vessel specifications and joint venture context

The new 7,900 dwt ships will measure 119.9 m in length, with a beam of 18 m, maximum draught of 6.85 m, and a cargo tank volume of about 8,950 cu m. Essberger’s chemical tanker fleet operates within the E&S Tankers joint venture alongside Stolt-Nielsen, a key partnership for European chemical logistics.

What buyers should watch

Overseas chemical importers and distributors should monitor the delivery timeline from 2028 onward, as the new Ice Class 1A vessels will enhance shipping capacity for Northern European coastal routes. The replacement of older tonnage with modern, environmentally optimised ships may lead to improved reliability and potentially tighter supply of older vessels, influencing freight rates for chemical parcels in the region.

China sourcing context

China Merchants Industry Yangzhou Dingheng, the shipyard for this order, is a major player in Chinese chemical tanker construction. This order underscores the continued reliance of European chemical shipping companies on Chinese shipbuilding capacity for specialised stainless steel chemical tankers, which may affect lead times and pricing for similar vessels in the global market.
