Editor's note

This incident, sourced from the Yumen Emergency Management Bureau, signals heightened safety risks in China's chemical sector. Overseas buyers should watch for potential supply disruptions and regulatory tightening, especially for specialty chemicals from smaller manufacturers, and consider diversifying sourcing to mitigate risks.

A fire at Gansu Jinte Chemical Co., Ltd. in Yumen City, Gansu Province, on April 6 has resulted in at least three deaths and two injuries, underscoring ongoing safety risks in China's chemical manufacturing sector that overseas buyers should monitor for potential supply disruptions and regulatory tightening.

On April 6, 2026, at approximately 10:40 a.m. local time, a fire broke out at Gansu Jinte Chemical Co., Ltd., located in the Yumen Chemical Industrial Park. The fire occurred in a three-story reinforced concrete building. By 12:14 p.m., the blaze was extinguished, and search and rescue operations concluded at 12:57 p.m., according to a statement from the Yumen Emergency Management Bureau on April 7.

Broader safety context

甘肅玉門一化工廠發生火災 至少3死2傷

This incident is part of a series of chemical production safety accidents in China. On April 1, a flash explosion during maintenance at Jinzhou Jintai Fine Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. in Liaoning's Binhai Chemical Industrial Park killed two people. Separately, on the same day, a roof collapse at Zhongmei Guanjiaya Coal Industry Co. in Shanxi's Xingxian County trapped and killed four miners.

Regulatory overview

According to China's Ministry of Emergency Management, in early to mid-February 2026, multiple major accidents nationwide resulted in 71 deaths. In March, various production safety incidents caused an additional 44 deaths. Notable incidents include an explosion on February 7 at Shanxi Shuozhou Jiapeng Biotechnology Co., which was illegally producing 2-nitro-3-methylbenzoic acid, killing eight and injuring three. On March 31, a suffocation accident at Inner Mongolia Hulunbuir Dongneng Chemical Co. killed three and injured one.

What buyers should watch

Overseas chemical buyers should monitor potential production halts or capacity reductions at plants involved in accidents, as well as any tightening of safety inspections across China's chemical parks. Such events may lead to temporary supply constraints for specialty chemicals and intermediates, particularly from smaller manufacturers. Buyers are advised to verify supplier compliance with safety regulations and diversify sourcing to mitigate risks.
