【Egypt】Egypt Fertilizer Prices Show Mixed Trends: Free Market Drops, Subsidized Rates Hold

Editor's note

This week’s data reveals a clear split: free-market blended fertilizer prices fell 5.13%, while subsidized rates held firm. For buyers, this divergence signals potential shifts in import demand and underscores the need to track Egypt’s subsidy policy and tariff adjustments, which directly impact competitive pricing and supply-chain stability.

Egypt's fertilizer market is experiencing notable price divergence across distribution channels as of May 30, 2026. Free-market prices for blended fertilizers dropped 5.13% week-on-week, while subsidized rates for registered farmers remain stable. This dual-pricing system directly impacts importers, distributors, and formulators sourcing from or supplying to the Egyptian agricultural sector.

Free-market prices (per tonne)

Blended fertilizers averaged EGP 19,494 per tonne, down EGP 1,054 (-5.13%). Ammonium nitrate stood at EGP 24,899/tonne, urea at EGP 25,423/tonne, and ammonium sulfate held steady at EGP 19,906/tonne. These prices apply to commercial trading and bulk purchases outside the subsidy system.

Subsidized prices for registered farmers

Under the official cooperative system, urea bags cost EGP 290 each, nitrate bags EGP 285 each. Bulk products include calcium nitrate/potassium sulfate at EGP 21,000/tonne, phosphoric acid at EGP 16,300/tonne, nitrate fertilizer at EGP 7,800/tonne, magnesium sulfate at EGP 6,800/tonne, and phosphate (coarse/fine) ranging EGP 2,225-2,275/tonne.

Retail prices for small farmers

In commercial markets outside the subsidy system, bagged chemical fertilizer sells for EGP 1,300 each, while organic fertilizer bags are EGP 270 each. These retail prices reflect open-market supply-demand dynamics for smallholder purchases.

What buyers should watch

The 5.13% decline in free-market blended fertilizer prices signals easing demand, which may pressure import volumes in the near term. However, stable subsidized rates indicate continued government support for domestic production. Overseas suppliers should monitor Egypt's import tariff adjustments and subsidy policy changes, as these directly affect competitive pricing for urea, nitrates, and phosphates.
