The Korea Chemical Industry Association (KCIA) is accelerating a tailored talent development program for the petrochemical sector, aiming to secure field-ready workers amid rapid digital transformation and a shift toward eco-friendly, high-value production. This initiative directly impacts global buyers sourcing from South Korea, as a skilled workforce supports stable supply chains and innovation in advanced chemicals.
Program overview
The KCIA held the second steering committee meeting of the Petrochemical Industry Human Resource Development Council (SC) on May 26, sharing first-year results and discussing future directions. The SC is part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Industrial Innovation Talent Growth Support Project, designed to build a customized talent training system through workforce supply-demand analysis, education, certification, and job standards development. The KCIA has been leading this initiative since 2025.
Industry participation
Over 20 major companies, including Hanwha Solutions and SK Chemicals, along with related organizations and university faculty, attended the steering committee meeting. This broad industry-academia-research collaboration underscores the sector's commitment to addressing talent shortages and aligning training with real-world needs.
First-year achievements

In the first year, the KCIA conducted a survey on workforce supply-demand and training needs, developed industry-specific education programs, operated job placement support, and built a collaborative network. Notably, it created a new process efficiency curriculum reflecting field demands, held national competitions, and ran career programs for meister high school and university students, boosting industry awareness and attracting future talent.
Future direction
Committee members agreed on the need for more advanced talent development to respond to AI-driven digital transformation and the shift toward eco-friendly, high-value industries. In the second year, the KCIA will expand field-demand-based education and build a system linking incumbent workers with young talent.
What buyers should watch
For overseas importers and distributors, a stronger talent pipeline in South Korea's petrochemical sector means enhanced production efficiency, faster adoption of sustainable technologies, and more reliable supply of high-quality industrial chemicals, solvents, polymers, and specialty materials. This initiative signals long-term stability and innovation capacity in a key sourcing market.
